Watch finder: choose by how you will wear it
A good watch fits your wrist, suits your day and does not leave you regretting the price. Answer the three questions below to see the best group, then read three short sections to get the size and materials right.
Who is the watch for?
What do you need it for most?
Do you already own a watch?
Measure your wrist first, then pick a case size
Wrap a tape measure or a strip of paper around your wrist where the watch will sit. Under 16 cm suits a 34–38 mm case; 16–18 cm suits 38–42 mm; over 18 cm carries 42–46 mm well. For women, 26–34 mm reads elegant and 36 mm or more reads bold.
- The lugs should not overhang the edge of your wrist.
- Cases thicker than 13 mm tend to catch on shirt cuffs.
Analogue, automatic or smartwatch
Quartz analogue watches are light, accurate and low-maintenance. Automatic watches wind themselves as you move, ideal if you enjoy mechanics, but they need regular wear or a winder. Smartwatches handle calls, notifications and steps, but need charging every few days. Browse smartwatches for features or men's watches for a classic look.
Strap materials and water resistance
Metal bracelets are durable and office-friendly; leather looks refined but dislikes water; silicone suits sport and swimming. 3 ATM handles rain and hand-washing, 5 ATM allows shallow swimming, and 10 ATM or more is for regular swimming. Check each listing, as brands label this differently.
