How to change a watch strap at home and get the size right

Changing a watch strap at home is easier than most people think. Most of the time you need one small tool, or nothing at all if the strap has quick-release pins. A fresh strap makes an old watch look new, and swapping straps for different occasions lets one watch cover both the office and the weekend. Measure your watch strap size before you buy

Strap size is the inside gap between the two lugs, where the spring bar sits. Use a ruler marked in millimetres and measure from the inner edge of one lug to the inner edge of the other. Common sizes:

If you measure an odd number such as 19 mm, do not force a 20 mm strap in. For smartwatches, what matters most is the exact model and case size (41 mm or 45 mm, for example), because many lines use their own connector rather than standard pins.

How to change a watch strap with spring bars

1. Lay the watch face down on a soft cloth so the crystal does not scratch.
2. Use a spring bar tool (the forked end) to push the end of the spring bar inward, then tilt the strap out of the lug.
3. Fit the spring bar into the new strap, slot one end into a lug hole, compress the other end and slide it in until it clicks.
4. Tug the strap gently to make sure both ends are seated.

How to change a smartwatch band

Every brand differs, but you will usually meet one of three systems:

• Slide-in slot: press the small button on the back and slide the band out sideways. Slide the new one in until it clicks.
• Standard 20 or 22 mm quick release: change it just like an analogue watch.
• Proprietary clip: squeeze both sides of the clip and pull; only bands made for that model fit.

• Silicone: light, waterproof and easy to rinse, ideal for sport and swimming. Pick a perforated one if you sweat a lot.

Tips to make a watch strap last

• Replace a strap when the holes tear, the pins feel loose, or it discolours and smells.
